Abstract
We intend to investigate the effectiveness of aquatic exercises to body fat and physical function in obese patients with knee osteoarthritis. Participants with obesity who had knee osteoarthritis were recruited. All participants were randomly allocated into 2 groups as aquatic (n=20) and control (n=18) group . Exercise interventions were done 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Body fat analysis, brief pain inventory (BPI), WOMAC osteoarthritis index, and SF-36 questionnaire were evaluated before and 1 month after intervention. There were no significant differences of demographic characteristics of each group before exercise. The weights, body mass index and body fat composition after aquatic exercises were not significantly reduced in both groups. Aquatic group showed significant better change in pain and disability (WOMAC; 37.0¡¾14.8 ¡æ 22.7¡¾11.5, P=0.001) than control group. Aquatic exercise is an effective tool for obese patients who have a difficulty in active exercise due to combined knee osteoarthritis.
